Equal playing time in grassroots football: how to get it right

Why fair minutes matter in youth football, and a simple way to make sure every child gets their share.

Why it matters

Kids join a team to play. When some children spend most of the game on the bench, they enjoy it less, develop less, and are more likely to drop out. Parents notice too.

The simple maths

Fair minutes per player = (players on the pitch × match length) ÷ squad size. With 10 players in a 7-a-side game of 50 minutes, that's 7 × 50 ÷ 10 = 35 minutes each. Try it with your own numbers in the free calculator.

Why it's hard on the day

Late arrivals, injuries, a keeper who won't come off, and a close score all pull you away from the plan. Writing the rota before kick-off, and sticking to it, is the single biggest help.

Track it across the season

One game won't ever be perfectly even. Keeping a record over the season lets you balance it out: the child who got fewer minutes this week starts next week.
